We are welcoming 24 visitors to Skerries this week from our twin area of Guichen in Brittany.  Our Breton friends will stay from 10 to 15 July and enjoy a programme of activities in Skerries and around the area.  The visit is organised by Skerries Town Twinning.  Skerries has been twinned with Guichen now for over 30 years and hundreds of people from both communities have enjoyed lots of hospitality, learning about each other’s cultures, and making friends. 

 

The theme for the visit this year is “building community’, something we are very proud of in Skerries! The work of the Skerries Community Association, of which Skerries Town Twinning is a part, will be showcased for our visiting friends on Saturday 11 July, along with other voluntary groups who make our town a great place to live.  We are looking forward to hearing about community life from our Breton friends too. 

 

Our visitors, some of whom are here for the first time, will have a chance to tour the new Skerries Library, an important space for our community!  They will also visit the Battle of the Boyne site in Oldbridge, Bremore Castle in Balbriggan, and Leinster House to see our Oireachtas in action.

 

Town Twinning is about fostering friendship between communities through cultural, sporting and interest-centred contacts and exchanges.  It is based on mutual hospitality, by opening homes to each other and extending the hand of friendship. It’s a way of seeing how other people live and of making new friends. Town Twinning is a great experience for all – families, individuals, students and groups.
